Touring Tips

  • Critter Country's only dining location, Hungry Bear Restaurant, may be best known for providing one of the more relaxing spots in the park.
  • Burgers, fried chicken sandwich, turkey sandwich, salad with chicken, onion rings, sweet potato fries. Kids' choices include hamburgers and chicken nuggets.
  • Stick to the burgers and opt for onion rings instead of the fries. The salad and turkey sandwich are just average. Popular and crowded during busier times of the year. During slower times, grab a snack and sit on the deck overlooking the Rivers of America.
  • Features of the menu are the fried green tomato sandwich, sweet potato fries, and blueberry pie.
  • The seating area is a large deck facing the Rivers of America. The lower deck in particular tends to stay quiet, providing a chance to relax, watch the various vessels on float by, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of one of the park's feral cats.
  • Wave at the Mark Twain Riverboat, the Sailing Ship Columbia and Davy Crockett's Explorer Canoes as they cruise by. Look for ducks on the shores of the Rivers of America, squirrels up in the trees and other woodland creatures scouting for a stray french fry!

History

The footprint of the Hungry Bear Restaurant was mostly unused until 1972, though portions may overlap with parts of the Indian Village that was in the area until then. When the restaurant opened in 1972 with the creation of Bear Country it was called Golden Bear Lodge.

The restaurant remains much the same as when it opened in 1972. The name was changed in 1989 when Bear Country became Critter Country.
